I totally agree Eric a great demo by Joey, she along with other members were very impressed with your masterpiece and to think you have only been doing it for a short time,it looks like my Daughter Jessie wants to do piercing now so I'd better start saving up also.Overall a great day thanks to the club for organising these great demonstrations.

  2. By Eric Harvey on May 14, 2013

Great demo by Joey Richardson last night (13th May),I was hoping to learn allot with techniques and such and I wasn`t disappointed,it was great to learn from a master about piercing techniques, looks like I`m doing it mostly right, but the demo was a great help.I`d love to have that £800-900 of airtool kit and can`t imagine how much the spraying kit was, will have to look on Binh Pho`s site and get a shock,if he has prices there, back to Joey, great pieces and designs, gives allot of food for thought for future design techniques, mind you when an idea pops into my head I normaly go with it as it tends to stick there till I`ve had a go at making it.I got a surprize when Joey liked my piece, when I saw the quality of her work,I wasn`t sure wether to get it out of the box and when Des (sorry if I got names mixed, still learning them all)said Joey wanted a word with me about it that was a shock,a very pleasant one mind you as it went down quite well with her,all in all I had a great time last night and hope everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did, regards,

Well done Dave very nice pattern in the vase very creative,it was great watching through the clouds of dust when blowing out the vase.
Eric's masterpiece was amazing makes me want to have a go.
Some great egg timers from members with Dave's fancy one to Vic's complicated design and Mick's 1st class piercing I think I should have gone back to the drawing board with mine.
Next step is for Jessie to make that whistle,I may regret this one.

  6. By ron davis on April 7, 2013

Mine is the same, you just cant get the same quality sand these days!

When we get to 100 comments i will open a second comment page, this software does not allow the latest comment to be at the top, so I wil open 'Your Turn2' soon

  7. By Des on April 6, 2013

At last we have an egg timer finished one snag the sand gets stuck every now and again so should be good for hard boiled eggs.

  18. By Des on February 15, 2013

Good work to everyone on the committee,Carol the products I bought from Mark were Jo Sonja's Brilliant metallic collection, rose gold, copper, pale gold, pearl white, rich gold, silver,I also bought iridescent colours gold, green, red, violet, blue, turquoise The ones I used on the clock and platter were pearlescent they came in deep pink, pink, yellow, green, purple, blue,I found these very good when spinning the paint outwards.on the back I used mylands spirit stain with pearlescent over the top,I found I needed to let each colour dry as they mixed together giving a different colour.Mark said to give a light coat of sanding sealer between coats to seal the paint

Ryan's black goblet is in Revolutions this month on the AWGB stand.

  19. By Ron Davis on February 13, 2013

Thanks for the nice comments, nice to know we are appreciated.
Carol. I have sent you an email with Marks details.

  20. By mick on February 12, 2013

Hi Carol , I think Mark was useing Mayland products but D J Evans do sell Chestnut spirit stains which give a good finish.

  21. By Carol Sturman on February 12, 2013

Thanks to everyone on the committee. You all work hard to make the club as successful as it. On a different note, can someone post the name of the paints that Mark Raby used last month. I would like to try some and I'm disappointed that I missed the demo.

  22. By mick on February 12, 2013

Thanks Ron for your talk I think you done a great job also a big thank you for all your hard work as our club secretary.

  24. By Des on January 20, 2013

Another great demonstration from Mark Raby this month I think we will see some colourful pieces very soon,I was very impressed with members work very clever indeed.

  25. By Ron Davis on December 11, 2012

Well I got close! You must have been pleased to beat Ryan though, by jst one point.
We should have had a prize for the best looking car, Ryan would have won that along with all the other thinggs he has won this year!
I will put pictures up on the web site soon

  26. By Des on December 11, 2012

Looks like we will have to try harder to beat Howard, perhaps we could let some air out of his wooden tyres.
Looking forward to Mark and Lisa Raby next time.
    Merry Christmas Everyone
    Des Ryan & Jess

  28. By Des on November 27, 2012

  30. By Des on October 18, 2012

What a great educational talk from Mendlesham Chairs Ryan took great interest in this as he loves his joinery.
Ryan has also done very well this week at wizardry in wood in London,he made a candlestick to be used at their banquets,he gets a national diploma for his work and is put into a special leather bound book,he also gained 1st place in the Junior competition, and 2nd place in the Ray Key competition.Stuart Mortimer has offered to mentor him.and to top it all he passed his driving test.WHAT A WEEK.

  31. By Ron Davis on September 30, 2012

Thanks Des,I went for the flying owl, I thought the turtle was extremely well done and a source of pride for the carver, but I thought the choice of timer for the shell was not quite right, turtles do not have spalted shells!
Better by a country mile than anything I can carve!

  32. By Des on September 29, 2012

Hi Ron I see from your e-mail you had a good day at Cressing Temple Barns,we went on the Sunday minus Ryan he went fishing.,yes we got wet.I learned a lot from John Lloyd with his excellent demo on veneering. A great day out with lots to see,as for the carving we chose the diving turtle, and hey presto it won.

  41. By Ron Davis on September 3, 2012

Iagree, I have mentioned this in the newsletter and Howard not only works hard to produce these reports, they are full of detail and should inspire some of us to attend some of these events in the future

  42. By mick on September 2, 2012

Just a quick note to say a big thankyou to
our Howard for his reports on shows and events around the country.

great demo by Mick Hanbury (sorry if spelling is wrong),it was a very enjoyable evening watching Mick,I`ve never seen him before so was a good learning curve,as with Simon the month before was, will try to emulate him on my new Jet 3520B lathe, just got it running,so off to play, regards to all,Eric.

  45. By Des on July 11, 2012

Hi Ron,we will have to wait and see how Ryan gets on before Jess does it to see how hard it is.
Yes we will collect the shavings at those prices you can't waste a bit £42.00 inc vat & post for 1 kg
Simon was very clear with his demo, I think Ryan will get on well with him on his training day in August.

  46. By Ron Davis on July 11, 2012

Thanks Des, save and remelt the man said! Do you think Jessica will have a go?

I will look into booking Simon again later.

  47. By Des on July 11, 2012

A brilliant demonstration by Simon hope,Ryan has ordered his pewter online so we will have to wait and see what happens,if all goes wrong he will have some very shiny shavings.

  48. By Des on June 16, 2012

Well done Ron uploading the pics, love your table lamps.

Hope you enjoyed the England game

  49. By Ron Davis on June 15, 2012

  50. By Des on June 14, 2012

Hi Ron thought I would have a go after watching so many demonstrations with Ryan,If you had seen the amount of mistakes I made it is amazing I completed them both,it was good fun though.
I think we have Simon Hope next meeting,Ryan has just recently applied to go on a training day with him in August through the AWGB,so it will be good to meet him.
Looking forward to seeing the photo's of the club members talents,Cheers Des

Another interesting demo by Brian Partridge as always, and some very nice drop spindles by club members, think we need Ron to stand up next time to show off his wonderful pen.Got away with that one Ron.

  55. By Ron Davis on April 10, 2012

I will pass your comment on to Howard, as he does not have a computer.
You might like to look in 'Out and About' for his comments on the South East Woodworking Show

  56. By Dave Elliott on April 7, 2012

hi everyone I think Howard's dust extactor is the bee's knees,if you can keep the dust out of your lungs its a good thing.Maybe you could draw up a type of plan for people that need one Howard.Nice one Howard ,Dave

  57. By Ron Davis on March 19, 2012

I agree Des, the attention to detail was mind boggling. Ryans table was something special as well and the photo's of him working. I will do a feature on the web site soon, if I can have some photo's and a chance to talk to Ryan.

  58. By Des on March 16, 2012

We really enjoyed the bird carving by Terry Getley what a perfectionist Jessica wants to carve a bird now.
Some lovely pieces of work by club members, I really liked Carol's bowl it was decorated perfectly, the best I have seen so far with these paints.See you all next meeting.Des

  59. By Ron Davis on March 9, 2012

Thanks for the comment Carol, Micks advice is good and that is why we started the club.
I put the article in Revolutions because I felt we had something to shout about! I was very much a club effort so welldone to all of you.
I am looking forward to seeing everybodies drop spindles on the 2 April

  60. By Carol Sturman on March 6, 2012

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to thank Mick for the advice about putting a cardboard collar between the faceplate and the lathe. It's much easier to get off now. It's great that we have the support of the more experienced turners at the club.
Well done Ron for the excellent article about the toys in the new edition of revolutions. Good to see we're sharing the club's achievements.
Looking forward to seeing you all Monday.

I agree, that is a special piece of work. Nice to know hat we have such talent in the club

  62. By Des on March 3, 2012

I must say it was very very interesting to have Howard explain all the woods on the tree he made,it was nice to know more about what the woods were and where they came from especially those from ships.

    Nice one Howard.

Looking forward to the carving next meeting, see you all there.

    Des & Ryan

  63. By Dave Elliott on February 21, 2012

    Hi everyone

  64. By Ron Davis on February 18, 2012

I am looking forward to this, some of his work was on display at one our early sessions when Jim Snell gave us a talk on making walking sticks. The birds were almost alive!

  65. By Don Bennett on February 17, 2012

If you are interested in woodcarving, don't miss our next meeting (March) as Terry Getley will be demonstrating his skills. He is a British and European champion, mainly carving birds.

    Hi jon,
I have some carving mags would you like them ,there may be some local clubs near by.

  69. By Ron Davis on January 11, 2012

Thanks for the comments, it is always a joy to have Fred, I am sure he does not realise the quality of his work and of his demonstrating skills. I will soon be making some of the birds and seeing if they re as easy as Fred made them look.
I agree with Des regarding the super glue though!

I know that eric comes quite a distance to the club, as do several other members sowe must be dong something right

  70. By Eric Harvey on January 10, 2012

I`m fairly new to the club, but it is such a friendly welcoming club, its great to be there.last night,(mon 9th jan),was a really good demo with Fred,it was a laugh a minute with his funny stories and his losing of tools.the turning was simple but very effective, especialy for novices or people with a lack of confidence,I had a really enjoyable night again and look forward to next month, regards to all,

  71. By Des on January 10, 2012

    Hi all,
another interesting demonstration from Fred Winter full of laughs as usual, nice to see him doing it just for fun, although not to sure he should be any where near the super glue!

    Cheers Des & Ryan

  72. By Jon Winnan on January 10, 2012

Does anyone know of a local woodcarving cub please?

  73. By Ron Davis on December 15, 2011

Thanks Des, Tell Ryan not to worry, we all have a scrap box for the failures! Part of learning. When you consider what he has done in the past, Ryan has agreat future in front of him.

I agree with you that we have some top rate turners in the club and we will demonstrate again in the spring for our next competition

  74. By Des on December 14, 2011

I hope you can get to see us next session, I willask if there is anyone in the area who can give Ryan a lift

  81. By Des on November 16, 2011

A great demo by Nick Arnull very informative and very funny as well,Ryan has had a go with the countersink drill revealing the celestial look, but he's putting a twist to it with some hand carving,we will have to wait and see how it turns out.I think quite a few people were surprised to find slowing the speed to combat vibration with the tool to be a great tip,it makes sense.
Hope you all have a great Christmas meeting,I will try to get Ryan there somehow.

All the best Des & Ryan

    Hello everyone

I would like to thank all the committee members for setting up and the running of the club.I'd also like to thank the members because without them we would'nt have a club.and well done Ron and Dorothy for setting up this website. And to all members we all have to start somewhere, its the enthusiasm that matters.I'm waiting for someone to explain to me in a foolproof way how to to download some pictures,I would'nt mind betting I can make a computer do more things wrong than right.I look forward to seeing you all at the club at the next meeting Regards Dave

  88. By Ron Davis on September 6, 2011
